THE DREAM DEFENDERS HAVE CONVERGED ON THE CAPITOL OF FLORIDA TO DEMAND #JUSTICEFORTRAYVON.

We have released the following statement:

We are here to honor the memory of Trayvon Martin and pay respects to his family. This tragedy serves as a vivid reminder of the pain felt by our communities, in which we are profiled, criminalized and targeted. Unless we take action nothing will change. Saturday’s verdict showed the world that Florida has no value for the life of it’s children.  This is an opportunity for Governor Rick Scott and the Florida legislature to prove their commitment to the next generation of Floridians.

Dream Defenders demand that Governor Rick Scott call a special session of the Florida legislature to address the issues at the center of the Trayvon Martin tragedy: stand your ground vigilantism, racial profiling and a war on youth that paints us as criminals and funnels us out of schools and into jails.

Together we are united in ensuring Trayvon’s unjust death was not for nothing. Our anger in the face of gross injustice has led us to take action but it is the love of our people and our community that pushes us forward.

We are here because Trayvon can’t be.

We are here because our lives and our dreams remain at risk every day that the Governor and Legislature refuse to act.

We are proof of an organized youth resistance, in solidarity with youth movements across this country.

We will stay here as long as WE see fit, in defense of our rights as citizens, voters, and human beings.

We demand the Governor call a special session of the legislature to create a New Trayvon Martin Civil Rights Act for our state.

We will remain here, standing OUR ground, for Trayvon, for justice, until our demands are met.

I am appalled at the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case.
If Zimmerman would have stayed in his car, none of this would have happened.
The man is a cold blooded murder!!!
Zimmerman profiled Trayvon, and the result of his assumption, has caused a tragedy of monumental proportions!!
How can you let Zimmerman get away with murdering a young man?
    Self defense plea is rubbish!!!
Something must be done to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Most of America stands with you.

  • Nanette Saucier on July 16, 2013

Trayvon Martin died tragically and needlessly. The state of Florida must pass a civil rights bill that protects us regardless of the color of our skin. The “Stand Your Ground” Law does not work for civil rights. It is being used against civil rights. Listen to the Dream Defenders. Please.

Police shooting are youth & black male, New Jim Crow , Republican blocking votes’

August 12, 2011 i was finishing work assignment in Huntington, Wv., and caught
taxi too the airport, my employer rents car rental for their employee avoid high-cost airfare.
I leave the National Rental 7 pm to return to Ohio where the state I work out of and return the car back to Columbus,Ohio. Soon i get too Ohio, I’ve been stop by three different cities police department and one out the three cities its three different police department in one city where my employer located . I was parked behind the hotel I normally stay while sitting in the rental with Dodge Charger Florida license plate, mining own business attending my cell-andriod I saw Chillicothe pulling another vehicle over for broken light and the car very old to ,soon Chillicothe police finish, came right over ask what are you doing and demand with force just look in the vehicle to search with their guns minute later, more Chillicothe police, rest of Ross county sheriff police three car and State police, I was telling the Chillicothe police that I don’t do crime because I’m black male who don’t get treated fairly in court and I told police, just trying lock black males so they send them to Chillicothe Correction prison one of the Chillicothe police said my brother in there I said whats make that I want to go. Statepolice takes off like he want no part of the gang-banging me, and let policemen finishing bulling me like police do anything they want until they saw my employer information, said don’t tell my employer about this situation, why not police tell on you if caught wrongly. how many times I herd police told me not tell me not too tell my employer when having rental, and getting rob in their city so their city look bad. later on too my third city. To return rental I stop so I can finish work assignment paperwork so I drop it to postal office to my employer because employer didn’t inform me I was layoff for a week . Now here goes Columbus police, they’re stocking me, now I’m ready drop the car off because notice still lots more police who they looking for, me. police riding my tail course hopping I have drugs its was third city police stop I know I didn’t broke no laws of my driving. So I was tired of third stop, I 911 police dispatcher I know I didn’t do any crime when I stop the police said pull in the ally so no one see what they about to do me in the alley not good police do that, that’s yours last days on earth, police notice loud emergency buzz from their car 911 dispatcher inform them they’re being tape by me police comes back again begs me to turn off cell 911 call police said u’re safe with them, soon I turn it off . you are under arrest and the other police said that’s a smart N word about me, rest police officer said he got us good on tape lock him up anyway. while in the police car I ran my mouth they don’t like black people trying give out felonies and voting rights and I told them i get stop by 14 times a year DWB & WWB. And told them what happen in July by the police Greenville,Sc., and I dial 911 12 times by city, county, and state police SC. I was in Franklin county jail in Columbus,Oh four days and rental car impounded too as well. Search the car with camcorder when sending me to jail of course not dirty. Police wants high price luxury vehicle and sport luxury vehicle and luxury SVU turn them into police vehicle or keep the vehicle for themselves. I inform my employer what happen to me all police hopping I was drug dealing and transporting it or hoping that I have gun. also take my voting rights and send me to prison. All of this cause my health to go bad turning into diabetic, high blood pressure. Next month on Spet 19, 2011, I pass out a Greeley,Co in the hospital thru Oct 6, 2011. on spet 30, 2011 I suppose be in Columbus court I had fax letter to judge gotten sick. Know my credit is bad, personal credit , hospital bills, and I can’t work my employer because on certain medication. Know I need money children college education, money I won’t be making the money use too and my spouse, I need money for medication, money for another vehicle, car payment and mortgage. That maid me broke that why I do crime or won’t period, felony cant get a job , you can’t vote your rights and lock in prison losing out on life and can’t love a woman and make babies. I’ve been stop DWB or WWB since 12 years old, this’s still going on at age 45 years old. The Ohio woman who’s an political activist or politician said our people need to stop doing crime period. Even, I tell people don’t crime period. There’s lot more about this story too just holding out, I need to tell.

    The House and The Senate!

  • Dove Jackson on July 16, 2013

Election is coming up, and us people, as a unit Will vote you and your workers out. We want justice to be done and a change to occur in Florida. Stand your ground law must go. A bill in trayvon name should be place in law, for us black men to not be profile, killed or through in jail for what we wear, what we look like or what we do in our spare time. This injustice will not go on. If not justice is done, Rick Scott will be replace.

I am so proud of us as Young African Americans. There was a point when my ignorance thought we didn’t still do things like this. We didn’t march to try to fix the unjust, we didn’t march to try and bring awareness to our wrongs. But at this moment I am so very proud to know we do all the things now today that we have had to do for decades to get equality or what they’ll give us close to it.

  • Maria on July 18, 2013

    “Si se puede “. Thanks!!

  • MIa on July 23, 2013

I support the movement. We must not sit and just rally but we must show up at the polls better than before with a clear purpose. We must stand our ground in assuring that this will never happen to a child in the State of Florida. Everyone regardless of your race must come to the realization that a child was slained/murdered/killed! The only way to change Florida is to show the forces that be we are united and we will see them at the polls. Let us pull the covers back and truly expose those people that are in office with true purpose to extinguish our race! They kill our men they kill our future!

  • Dee Adair on July 24, 2013

It’s awesome to see young people make the connection between what has happened to their lives and future. We believe in you! Our prayers and support is behind you. Keep the Dream Alive! MLK died for freedom against oppression and you are continuing that fight. It is sad to see that some people are trying to reverse the progress made in the last 45 years since his death! Evil prevails when the good do nothing! We appreciate you for standing up for what is right! You are not alone!
